In 1835, cantonal engineer Adrien Pichard designed a series of low-level roads to bypass the medieval town and connect it to the main roads leading to the outside world, culminating in the opening of the Barre tunnel in 1855.
The forge was replaced in 1841 by the Auberge de l'Ours.
From 1850, the Barre tunnel was linked to La Caroline by the route de la Solitude, a branch of which joined the future Place de l'Ours, which was then enlarged. Less steep than rue Martery, this new road was used by convoys leaving the center of town heading north2.
